Kayan Mentarang National Park is a huge area of mostly montane forest in the very heart of Borneo. It is also the homeland of several Dayak ethnic groups that have lived in the forests and along the rivers of the area for centuries. Their cultural and artistic expressions, and their traditional knowledge, reflect the closeness with the environment, and the flora and fauna of the park.

The WWF-Indonesia Kayan Mentarang National Park Project, with its focus on collaborative management, is a very good example of how the interests of conservation can go hand in hand with the needs of people. The work done in the Kayan Mentarang National Park has been both innovative and pioneering. Stakeholders have joined forces to find long term, practical solutions for the management of the National Park  and secure ecological, economic, and social benefits for its people and government.
